SAN DIEGO COUNTY FENCE & GATE FAQ
In the City of San Diego, Fire-Rescue Standard D-2 requires new fences and gates within 5 feet of a new home in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone to be noncombustible, with a 5-foot noncombustible span where a fence attaches. The unincorporated County's WUI Code counts fences within 5 feet of a dwelling as structures. Other cities set their own rules; our fence rules by city page compares them.
Enter the address in our Zone 0 address checker, which reads CAL FIRE's public Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps for San Diego County. The official designation comes from CAL FIRE's FHSZ maps and your local fire authority.
Ask for the product's test report: ASTM E136 for noncombustible materials such as aluminum and steel, or ASTM E84 for a flame-spread class on composite or wood. We supply product-specific reports on request and confirm acceptance with your local AHJ.
Insurance treatment varies by carrier and policy. Fire hardening may help, but discounts or eligibility are not guaranteed. Confirm details with your insurer.
